Privacy Resources

Your housing co-op must comply with the provincial Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) which includes the need to have a PIPA policy [link?] and a designated PIP Officer. We offer a range of resources to help you meet the requirements of the Act, including templates and checklists. Some are editable Word documents and others are samples that help guide you with practical examples.

Back

On January 1, 2004, the provincial Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) came into force for all organizations in BC not covered by other privacy legislation. PIPA recognizes both:

  • the right of individuals to protect their personal information and
  • the need of organizations to collect, use or disclose personal information for purposes that a reasonable person would consider appropriate in the circumstances

PIPA covers information routinely collected by housing co-ops about applicants and members such as income information, birth date and relationship to other household members.

To help your co-op comply with PIPA, view the PIPA checklist and an overview of the contents.

Need more help? We offer a ‘PIPA: A Privacy Information Primer for Co-ops’ workshop which you can request as a portable at your co-op, or find out if it is due to be offered as a scheduled workshop or webinar. CHF BC can also work with your board, committee, PIP Officer or general meeting with a consultation.
