Sustainability & Resilience
CHF BC has a model sustainability policy that can be tailored to meet your needs, and other resources that highlight some of the activities housing co-ops can and do take on to reduce their environmental impacts.
Each co-op is different, and what works best for one, may not work well for another. Sometimes heating is provided by the co-op; sometimes, individual members make arrangements with utilities. Apartments and townhomes may have different options when it comes to composting. You can adjust policy to best fit your circumstances and member preferences.
Sustainability is something that concerns co-op members directly and also ties into the broader co-op principle of concern about community. We have a policy template that takes a wide-ranging perspective concerning energy efficiency, water consumption, resource use, purchasing decisions and tracking. We also have a discussion guide to help co-ops consider ways to make the template their own.
On resiliency, we offer some tips on managing extreme heat and smoky conditions.
