Guide to the Co-op Act

Back

As legislation changes, and as the housing co-op sector gains more experience with the legislative framework, the Guide to the Act evolves. We anticipate working on a revised Guide some time in 2026.

One thing to note is that although CHF BC generally spells “co-operative” with a hyphen, it can also be spelled without the hyphen. The Province passed the first co-operative act (with a hyphen in its name!) in 1896. The current law, the Cooperative Association Act, has been in force since 2001, although there have been changes since that time.
