Legal: Privacy Act
The key law in BC regulating co-ops and privacy is the Personal Information and Privacy Act (PIPA). It requires co-ops to have a PIPA policy and a designated PIP Officer. You can find more tools for your co-op under the Privacy Resources‘s PIPA Tools. Here you’ll find a Guide to B.C.’s Personal Information Protection Act for Businesses and Organizations, published by the Office of the Information & Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.
There is also Federal legislation relating to co-ops and privacy: the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). It regulates personal information collected and used by organizations outside government, connected to commercial activities. (Government use of personal information is a matter for the Federal Privacy Act.)
